Working in video with companies and nonprofits there is a conversation I have a few times a year, for so many years now it could be called decades. It comes from a myriad of departments and teams - Marketing, PR, HR, Development. They all have discovered a way to be more effective by having the ability to shoot videos themselves. This is smart but now they are stuck asking themselves: "What equipment do we absolutely need? And what are the best products to buy for our budget?"

Two Ways I Enter the Conversation

Early in the Process Our long-term clients reach out before making any purchases. They ask for my recommendations upfront. You might think this would be awkward – asking your video vendor for advice on equipment that could reduce their business. But here's the thing: if I were an oil painter and you bought my art, would it hurt my feelings if you asked me for affordable recommendations on quality paints and brushes? Or would I feel honored that you value my expertise enough to seek my guidance?

Later in the Process Unfortunately, many organizations assume that first conversation would be awkward. They rely on self-guided internet research and go straight to purchasing equipment on their own. That's when I get the second type of call: "We bought equipment, but our videos don't look professional. What went wrong?"

This is a much more challenging situation to remedy – and often more expensive to fix.
